Sancharakaya
is the story of my trip through Sri Lanka. I think
this work is somewhat of a departure from Farang and
Miguk, in that I placed less emphasis on my personal
experience and observations, and attempted to focus
more on the culture.

7 wmv
- I spent a few days at a house in the prestigious
area called Colombo
7. This footage was taken at a private residence
and on the streets in this area. The tracks are an
Vladimir Horowitz rendition of an Etude, and "Isola"
by Ilya.

University
of Kalania wmv
- My
Father spent an afternoon showing me the University
of Kalania, which is where he spent most of his
time.

Colombo
Bus Station wmv
- Waiting for the bus that would take us down the
west coast of Sri Lanka, I slowly let go of my preconceptions
of travel. The clip was shot at a bus station in Colombo
and the track is Diesel
Boy's "Night Flight."

Sri Lanka, including a local concert in Tangalle;
and a vision
of three children learning how to surf in Unawatuna.
The track is Moby's
"My Weakness."

Pinnawela
Elephant Orphanage wmv
-After returning to Colombo from the beaches, I had
a few day respite before I set off for my tour of the

Radical's "Get What You Give." |

Sigiriya
wmv -
Sigiriya is one
of the most amazing sites in the world. The ascent
to the palace (or what remains of it) is definately
an experience for the ages, as are the frescoes.

The
Hotel Kandalama
wmv - After
dealing with stomach issues and roughing it at roadside
hotels and restaurants, it was a breath of fresh air
to stay at the Kandalama
Hotel. My Sri Lankan travel companions had a somewhat
different experience. |

Kandy
and the Temple of the Tooth Relic wmv
- The next destination was Kandy. I futzed around
a little with putting footage in reverse for this
piece, and had somewhat mixed results. The track is
Blackalicious'
Alphabet Acrobatics.

The
Botannical Gardens in Kandy
wmv
- I thought the sublime beauty of the botannical gardens
would make an interesting visual setting for an explanation
of the terrible violence that has plagued Sri Lanka
since they gained their independence. The track is
Ben
Harper's "Burn One Down."

Hills
of Nuwara Eliya
wmv
- The experience of Nuwara Eliya was the pinnacle
of a series of moments that successively topped the
past one. Ultimately, it presented me with the question
of what is the use of having a transcendent experience
if you have no one to share it with? The
track is Tori
Amos' "Taxi Ride."

Conclusion
wmv -
In the end, it is all about the act of stepping forth
blindly into the unknown. We spent the last night at
a quiet, anticlimactic guest house. I think I did some
of my best writing of the entire piece here. The track
is Moby's
"The Rafters." |
