I just finished watching the movie you made. It was amazing.
My own life has taken the turn towards making a decision
whether to accept a teaching position in South Korea. I
would be gone for six months; before I decide to leave,
I'm trying to figure out if this is right for me. Without
your website I wouldn't have had any clue what to expect.
So... thank you. To close, I do have a question: What advice
to you have, if any?

Holy
f$%@!ing Snatch! You're Premeire tricks look good
and I like the Snatchesque cinematography and Fight Club
reference Richie & Fincher would be proud. Your
music minor has paid off b/c I like how youve used
the intro song - your attention to detail adds a nice touch
of professionalism. That's enough of the ego building though
because the beginning is weak! - it's boring and your voice
puts me to sleep. Add a little enthusiasm, wheres
the spice? You need some work on the transition from the
beach scene to the street scene, it can be captivating to
start the sequence off slow, but it needs some powerful
content and the effect of a tranquil intro diminishes with
time b/c it turns downright boring. A smooth but explosive
transition would create a nice effect and work on the content
by narrowing the writing to a short personal excerpt - maybe
a brief account with a local hooker, b/c all I remember
from your commentary is that your dad bought a six pack
of Heineken. Remember, I want to learn about your experience,
but I want to be entertained as well. I'll look forward
to what you have in store- Good luck brutha!

I
found your entry on Itaewon and the Kenneth Markle murder
case insightful. I am a freshman at Scripps College and
in my Korean Politics class we have been discussing the
cultural and psychological influence of U.S. militarism
in S. Korea. We watched the documentary "Women Outside"
about Korean camptown women and it reminded me of your journal
entries. Your insight was powerful because it recognized
the disgusting objectification and sexual exploitation of
Korean women. This exploitation does not only influence
the Korean women in the U.S. military sanctioned sex industry.
It constructs a false cultural iconography of Asian women
as sexually submissive, unqustioningly obedient, desperate
to please her western man.

Hi
Jiyan, I actually found this site through a google search
of "lips pacific
beach." Glad to say I found what I was looking for-
a description of what
Lips is- and much, much more. I really enjoyed your first-hand
accounts of
Korean culture. I am Korean but haven't been able to connect
with my
heritage like so since the last and only time I went to
Korea was when I
was a baby. Just wanted to say I'm glad I've found your
site. Bookmarked,
yes. The site has got a great look and feel. And I am in
awe that you
interviewed Zero7. By the way, good call on the Arirang
House, but my
personal fave is the Boo Cho BBQ on Engineer Rd. They use
wood chips
instead of gas on your table grill.

Hey Jiyan,
I must say I have never been so captivated and
inspired by a website before. Since I ran into Drift
Reality I have become slightly addicted, great work.
Anyways, I don't want to bother you too much but I
have to ask you a somewhat technical question. What
kind of Video Camera do you use, and is it the one you
used in Korea and in the making of classics such as
'working at home'? and what editing software? I'm
really interested on what you use and what you
recommend for someone who wants to make similar
videos. Peace.

THIS
MESSAGE IS FOR EVERYONE:
Some of us stumble across the Drift Reality site accidentally,
some while
searching for specific information on far away adventures,
and some are
simply loyal devotees of Jiyan and his vision of life. The
bottom line is that
Jiyan is on to something here and the most important message
you can
take away from Drift Reality is that you should never settle
but always
challenge yourself to truly live. That may mean something
different from
one person to the next but it is up to each of us to follow
the path down
which our inner voice takes us, though it is not always
the clearest or
safest one. I think Jiyan truly takes chances by leaving
behind that which
is familiar and moving forward in life. By venturing forth
visiting new places
and meeting new people he has begun to collect a handful
of experiences
that can never be completely appreciated without having
also traveled a
similar path ourselves. Jiyan and Drift Reality's content
inspire me to
acknowledge my passions and step away from that which is
comfortable
and safe. Though there are still many traditional things
I want for myself,
such as marriage and children, I now also recognize there
is so much more
than my daily routine and I don't have to wait for something
to happen to
me. I can make things happen for myself. Jiyan reminds of
all of this and I
am blessed to know him. I believe he makes me a better person
in many
ways. Some of you may not be as passionate about Drift Reality
as I, but
I hope it still leaves you with something more than before.
Thanks
Jiyan!

Hey,
I've put up a few more videos. By the way, my Korean
boss saw your videos
and was asking me all about how I
knew you, etc. He thought you were still in Seoul and teaching
(hahaha). He is a really nice guy -- a wonderful boss. I
think he
saw a few of the earlier videos on your site.
